A New Beginning: Emely’s Story at Our Women Veterans Center
Earlier this year, Wounded Warrior Homes proudly opened the doors to our first Women Veterans Center in Escondido, home that provides a safe and supportive environment for two women veterans and their families.
The home was created to meet a growing need among veteran mothers in our community — women who have served our country and are now working hard to rebuild stability for themselves and their children. Since opening, the house has become a place filled with warmth, laughter, and healing.
One of our first residents, Navy veteran Emely Coleman, came to us at a pivotal time in her life. A full-time nursing student and single mother of two, she was balancing school, parenting, and the challenge of finding stable housing for her family.
“I was about to give up,” she said. “I thought maybe I’d have to quit school and work full-time just to keep a roof over our heads.”
In her search for help, Emely called 211 San Diego, where a caseworker shared a news article about Wounded Warrior Homes and our newly opened Women Veterans Center.
“I was like, this is it, this is destiny — I have to apply,” she recalled.
Within days, she connected with our team, and soon after, Emely and her children moved into our Escondido home and joining another veteran mom and her two children to form a small, supportive community under one roof.

Because stories like Emely’s — stories of resilience, hope, and new beginnings — remind us of the power of community and compassion.
This is why we do what we do.
