Helping those who protect our freedom

Welcome to Wounded Warrior Homes first blog, and mine for that matter. I have struggled with trying to find to what others would want to read about and I settled with where we are right now and how we got here…sounds like a reasonable place to start.

In May of 2009 my husband Steve and I were driving back and forth to Las Vegas what seemed like almost every weekend. On long car rides we tend to bounce ideas off each other and have some of our best discussions. We started discussing how we could use our varied backgrounds and serve our community in a bigger way. Steve is a general contractor, home inspector, I was a special education teacher and we are both real estate investors. So housing was a natural progression and we live in a military community. Who better to serve than the military! When we returned from Las Vegas I contacted Camp Pendleton’s Wounded Warrior Battalion and asked them how we could help and what they might need. They asked for transitional housing for service members with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Thus, transitional housing for service members with Traumatic Brain Injury was created.

Fast forward to March 2010…
We were incorporated on December 29, 2009, we are recognized as a public charitable trust and I plan to file the final papers by April 2, 2010 for our 501(c)3. We have hosted 2 fundraising event thus far and this weekend Stay Classy, a website dedicated to nonprofits organizations, is donating 10% of the proceeds from the tickets sales to their 5th annual Pub Crawl in Pacific Beach. Come on down and join the event! It starts at Nicks in Pacific Beach at 1pm tomorrow March 27th! Check out the website for Stay Classy at http://www.stayclassy.org/events/detail?eid=886

There are several upcoming events in the planning stages for the remainder of the year….Songs For Our Heroes concert in May, yard sale in June, motorcycle ride in late Aug, Padres game mid to late summer, chili cook-off and 6 inning softball game on 9/11. Any and all of these events will need a wonderful crew of volunteers like you to help make them happen. Love volunteering? We would be very honored and excited to have you as part of any event, email me at mia@woundedwarriorhomes.org for more information.

I did not realize there was so much to say…one more thing….Wounded Warrior Homes has been chosen as the charity for the Women in Business Symposium at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on May 20th. Thank you to Sheila McDonnell for the honor to participate in this amazing event!

Check back soon for more updates and be sure to check out our website at http://www.woundedwarriorhomes.org. Have a great weekend I hope to see you at the Pub Crawl in Pacific Beach!
